About this video: What is Slipstream? Slipstream is an arcade-style checkpoint racing game. You drive across 15 different tracks and race against the clock to get to the finish line, while avoiding the traffic and obstacles along the way. At the end of each track, the road splits in two different paths, allowing players to choose their next destination. The game takes place in a variety of exotic landscapes, including cities, mountains, forests, beaches and valleys, and features a simple yet challenging driving gameplay.
The colorful visuals are inspired by the atmosphere of 80’s and 90’s games such as OutRun, Daytona USA, Super Hang-On and Sonic the Hedgehog. The soundtrack also draws inspiration from that era, incorporating elements of synthpop and jazz fusion.
How does it work? Slipstream owes its unique visuals in part to an authentic, old school style Pseudo3D rendering engine, developed specifically for this game. There are no 3D models or 3D engines: everything is done with 2D bitmap graphics, including the road. The power of modern hardware allows for improvements and extensions to this method that weren’t possible back in the day but, at the core, Slipstream works the same way old games did.
Who’s making it? Slipstream is being developed by Sandro Luiz de Paula, a.k.a. ansdor, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The music and sound effects are made by Stefan Moser, a.k.a. effoharkay, from Charleston, South Carolina.
When is it coming out? Slipstream is due for release on PC in Q3 2015. There are no current plans for mobile or console releases.
